Paley, William

William Paley was a freelance camera operator and projectionist who worked for Proctor’s vaudeville theatre chain at the time the chain took over Montreal’s His Majesty’s theatre in 1901. With his “Kalatechnoscope”— a licensed Edison projector – Paley mingled for a few seasons with a number of vaudeville stars, including the Keaton family. Paley shot several winter scenes and local films in Montreal, such as Skating in Montreal, which complemented the program of Edison films he projected on the Kalatechnoscope. The Edison Manufacturing Co. distributed some of Paley’s Montreal tableaux after their screenings at Proctor’s.
